The Senate President has stated that an impeachment trial does not fall under the legal conditions required to call a special session of Congress. According to the law, a special session may only be convened under specific circumstances: if the president declares Martial Law, appoints a new vice president to assume the presidency due to the sitting president’s death or incapacity, or when there is a need to discuss or act on a pending bill.

He emphasized that an impeachment trial does not meet any of these conditions, making it unlikely that the Senate would be called to session outside the normal legislative schedule.

On February 5, the House of Representatives voted to impeach Vice President Sara Duterte, citing betrayal of public trust, violations of the Constitution, and other allegations. That same day, the articles of impeachment were transmitted to the Senate. Initially, 215 lawmakers supported the complaint, with 25 more later signing on.

In response to the developments, Duterte gave a brief but striking statement: “God save the Philippines.”

With the impeachment trial looming, the political landscape remains tense, and the nation watches closely as events unfold.
